Metrostar Express

5:40am. Somewhere along EDSA between Boni and Shaw. Czech-made trains. Silence punctuated by obtrusive bilingual advertisements. Weary, sleep-deprived passengers, all itching to arrive at their respective destinations. Only about a dozen more of these early morning Metro musings left for me before I depart for my next destination.

Last night, around 2:30 am, I woke up all of a sudden and noticed a yellow-orange glow coming from outside the window. After realizing that I’m not dreaming, I got up, exclaimed “OH MY GOD, is the house across the street on fire?!” and rushed to look. There it was, mere meters from our window, a burning motorcycle. There was an old lady who is saying a lot of stuff but I didn’t quite get it because my ears are not in tuned yet for Old Lady Spanish. Although from what Carlos told me, she was saying that someone set it on fire and it was not an accident.

I didn’t look any longer, I quickly backed away as I imagined that any second now that motorcycle could blow up with a force of a mini atomic bomb, break all our windows and send shards of glass and debris flying towards us. The firemen, “bombers” in Catalan which invokes an image of terrorist bomber in my head and not the one who actually puts out fire, anyway, they came and was able to put it out completely. Then I felt stupid thinking it will explode as obviously I don’t live inside a Michael Bay movie, neither do I look like Will Smith.

I wish I took photos but I was too terrified to even think about grabbing my iPhone.
